What can I get my boyfriend for his 30th birthday?

We're going away but I want to get him something that he can keep. Just bought a house so maybe some garden furniture? Not a watch or a bangle or aftershave etc....

Thanks!

What can I get my boyfriend for his 30th birthday?
Depends on what you want to spend though if you are thinking garden furniture you are willing to spend a bit.

Garden furniture is way too impersonal. Plus it's winter right? As far as electronics guys get picky about this and like to choose their own, thats half the fun. A bunch of little things is way better and more fun than one big one. It's more personal and shows that you pay attention to the little things that amuse him or likes.

A gift basket is something I always look forward to. My wife (then girlfriend) and I have enough money to just go out and buy what ever we want..... say like garden furniture.

Included in mine was a nice bottle of Vodka as any guy wants to have something like that around the house. But insert any liquor. If he drinks Jager Bombs include Jager and some Red Bull. Jack and coke? Same thing.

Number one was a Best Buy giftcard. A guy has great fun trying to decide what to buy as it is different than using your own money. I like to cook so there was a small gift card for the Chef's catalog, same thing.

Also incuded-

-A Hallmark Star Trek enterprise (she caught me watching Star Trek)

- An old Clint Eastwood movie because months before I was watching one and tried to explain why the music was so cool.

-An Army Special Forces GI Joe kind of thing from Toys R Us. Because that's what I used to do. It sits next to my computer and reminds me everyday why I love her.

-A nice lighter since I smoke and some cheap ones since I would always steal hers somehow.

Point is most women don't realize guys like a bunch of things..... not just one big one, it's like a Christmas stocking.. You get the idea. Think about what he likes. When I got this I realized that she just really knew me, was willing to be funny and think outside the box. It was then that I realized how thoughful she was.

On a funnier note she packed it all into an inexpensive smoker like you buy at home depot. I thought to myself "great, a smoker". But when I took off the lid it was just full of stuff.
Reply:Is he into gadgets? Someone was stuff for a present for me recently, so I got them to buy me some Bang and Olufsen earphones for my walkman - so much better than my old cheapo ones.
Reply:If he's into the whole garden thing then yey!! If not try buying him a star you can get them from argos believe it or not!!
Reply:Give him a sexy picture of yourself! I put money on it that he'll love it ! maybe you in some sexy panties
Reply:if they still do them how about a red letter day, hot air ballooning or racing or something like that, my opinion is don't get garden furniture that's the type of thing you can get anytime
Reply:what about a birthday card?
Reply:I don't think it would be impersonal to buy one unique piece of garden furniture. Perhaps a bench with storage underneath, or a really nice park bench sort of thing.

--That Cheeky Lad
Reply:Get him a Helmut Hong chain for the garden.
Reply:What about a leatherman penknife http://www.leathermans.co.uk/.

Or a really nice new leather wallet.
Reply:42 " Plasma TV, so he can watch football with his mates.
Reply:Without knowing how much you want to spend or his hobbies or likes something very personal, garden furniture to impersonal big time, would you like a blender for yours?

Buy him a really soft silk TIE/FOOTY/RUGBY SHIRT and DIGITAL CAMERA

Right

1. Fill room with candles

2. Soft music

3. Arrange a plate of cold hors'deuvres and sweet nibbles

4. Have a hot bath with bubbles ready

5. Lie on bed with only TIE/FOOTY/RUGBY SHIRT (that you have bought for his birthday present), heels or boots optional. His favourite scent he likes on you and a great big smile

6.And a nice digital camera to remind again again and again of his birthday night of passion with you.

Hope you both have a very enjoyable birthday =D
Reply:Guys love grilling. How about a new grill? Garden furniture is nice too. K-mart has some nice Martha Steward sets at different prices and they come on sale now and again.
Reply:A customized brass plaque that would go over or next to his door, or hang on a 'fence post' with his Last Name and the month and year of his buying his house...you could even use his name and make up a house name...like Casa......whatever...or Whatever 'Haven" etc.
Reply:Motorbike!
Reply:A power drill, any DIY tools. That new measure from Black and Decker is good, I want one, £25 from B%26amp;Q use it one handed, it does not bend, if he does not want it, send it to me.
Reply:a fifth of whiskey and some kgb
Reply:a live in lover?
Reply:a hot outfit and time in bed???????..........usually what they want anyway!!!
Reply:Stay away from garden furniture. You want to go with something that is more personal, and that he will actually like, and hopefully use. Take him somewhere he loves even. Furniture seems as if you are trying to make the house better, instead of really paying attention to what he likes/needs.
Reply:30? that's harsh, if it where me you could get me a large packet of paracetamol and a bottle of whiskey, alternatively a packet of razor blades.

If he is 30 then it might be time for a vasectomy they last for ever.

Sorry I will stop messing around now... Garden Furniture is good, but it may not keep and is not that sentimental, what is he really in to? does he have a hobby etc?
Reply:Without knowing you two, I can't offer anything appropriate. However, I can tell you what my friends did for my 30th in the hope you get a laugh out of it:

I wanted a dark chocolate cake for my 30th birthday. They got me one, alright... but it had written on it, "Happy BarMitzvah, Irving."

My name is not Irving, and I am not Jewish. I thought this was funny enough, but they had one more gag in store... the candles were the kind you CAN'T blow out, they just pop right back up with flame!

I've never forgotten that, and I still laugh about it!

Hope you two have a nice birthday party.
Reply:A great memory? what about paying for him to go racing at Silverstone or something out of the ordinary,

Does he smoke? Engrave a posh lighter.

Garden furniture strikes me as a little bit dull for a 30th.

Portable Digital TV viewer? Men as a rule love technology.

A framed and original work of art? That's 'housey'!

Hope that's given you some ideas.

hope I've been of some help..
Reply:i asked my husband this question and he looked at me like i was completely daft

then said "sex obviously..."

Reply:How about a professional photo of you both - not one of those horrible soppy ones, but a cool arty one
Reply:if thats what hes into then get him the garden furniture. i think he would want something memorable instead. go to an adult novelty store before you go away. get a nice "hot" outfit, with some oils and lotions, maybe some "toys", and definitely get some date "coupons" (they will know what your talking about). give him the coupon book and let him turn in coupons to you throughout you away time. you have to be willing to participate to the coupon he turns in so maybe look through them first. he will never forget it. hope you have fun

Does anybody know when its the gardening season in the UK?

I want to buy garden furniture out of season so I can save a few pennies ....

Thanks

Does anybody know when its the gardening season in the UK?
better start looking now then, or else wait until fall for clearance
Reply:All year is gardening season, always something to do :o)

But garden furniture is cheapest @ the end of summer.... September (in the Northern hemisphere) is when the stores start to clear the summer outdoor furniture... could perhaps get it cheaper later in the year... if there's any left :o)
Reply:The UK has similar weather conditions as our East Coast where I live. Best time to start planning to garden is late late March - Mid April By then, the frost (supposedly) has gone and the "April Showers" are beginning that will nourish your new plants/crops to enable them to grow healthy. If there is a late frost, wait until the weather reaches above freezing (40 degrees Fahrenheit). the best way to protect your new plants and flowers if a frost returns out of season is to cover them lightly with burlap...this keeps in warmth. allows moisture in moderation, keeps snow from touching, and lets your plants "breath" at the same time.

the best time to have planted bulbs was late September through October...before the frost begins.
Reply:If you mean like tables/chair etc, they probably won't be popular until May/June/July time and that's if we actually get any sun.

How do I get rid of urban foxes (London)?

They tear up the lawn; rip through garden furniture canopy, dig holes; tear at anything plastic; eat through and pull up electric garden cables etc. Oh, not to mention the crying noises all night! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

How do I get rid of urban foxes (London)?
POISON THEM OR SHOOT THEM. A FRIEND OF MINE BOUGHT A COUPLE OF OVEN READY CHICKENS AND LIBERALLY DOSED THEM WITH WARFARIN,DIDN'T SEE THE FOX AGAIN
Reply:shoot them but not with a shot gun within 300 yards of a public highway
Reply:that's not the foxes, that's me... i'm your stalker!!! But I suppose I am a bit of a fox too!
Reply:buy a big dog house it in your garden
Reply:Be greatful you have them, here in the country, a load of blood thirsty tossers are killing them all!!!! Despite hunting being banned, THEY ARE STILL DOING IT.
Reply:shoot them, run them over, leave out poison, get an exterminator, tell them to feck off.
Reply:You can buy an electronic fox deterrent I understand it emits a signal that the foxes do not like. or another way which is a lot cheaper but I must admit we have not tried it but we are reliably informed it works and that is sprinkle urine around your garden but it must be male and I would think you would need a lot of it.

hope these suggestions help
Reply:Move to the country

Are garden bird dropping s a health hazard?

as my neighbour feeds them all day every day and my plants a garden furniture is full of it

Are garden bird dropping s a health hazard?
Yes they are, really bad, rush across to your neighbour and make him eat that sh*t that the birds eat, if he doesn't beat him on the head until he is dead and gone
Reply:don't have clue about health but they great fertiliser
Reply:well with bird flu in countries around the world it maybe ,but not likely
Reply:Well I'd clean my garden furniture but it's ok for the plants. It should fertilize them!
Reply:Yes. Close your mouth when laying on the sun lounger.

What's the setup cost if I want to get into compound casting?

I am fascinated by the idea of designing and casting my own objects.

I could see myself casting anything from garden furniture to boat hulls.

For now though, I'm not even at the hobby stage of it yet.

What do you reckon, how much is it to get going, maybe with just enough stuff and accessories to start casting my own lawn ornaments?

What's the setup cost if I want to get into compound casting?
If you 're looking into casting you might want to try some of the simpler designs first.

Does anyone know where i can buy machinery to recycle sawdust and wood offcuts into fuel logs?

I manage a charity which makes hardwood garden furniture. I have been trying to find a machine that will turn our sawdust and offcuts into recycled fuel logs. I can find the logs, but not the machinery!

Does anyone know where i can buy machinery to recycle sawdust and wood offcuts into fuel logs?
Your question, "does anyone know . . . ?," was well stated.

The answer to that question is that certainly SOMEONE knows.

I hope you find that someone.

How do I calculate roof loadings for a flat roof?

I am considering building a roof terrace on top of my kitchen extention, which is a flat roof construction, approximately 2.5M by 3.5M.

I am aware that in order to do this, I need to be able to demonstrate to the local council planning department that the construction will be strong enough to carry the additional load of people %26amp; garden furniture on the roof.

1. What is the weight that I need to allow for (presumably based on the maximum number of people that could be assumed to be on the roof at any one time)

2. How do I calculate whether the existing joists and board are strong enough?

Existing joists run across the shortest run, and are 150mm x 55mm spaced approx 35cm intervals.

Roof board is particle contruction, however as the current felt roof has deteriorated and is now leaking I am planning to replace the boards with marine ply roofing board (18mm?)

Any comments / advice appreciated.

How do I calculate roof loadings for a flat roof?
I would start by getting a building engineer, to look at your roof 1st.. They will tell you, the weight per square foot allowed for your roof. Have your plan ready for him, he/she will then inform you on your next step on your project.
Reply:Flat roofs are constructed basically with joists spanning the gap between two walls, covered by sheet timber or other material. In the case of timber a further, waterproof cover is required. The weight of these last two coverings, together with the span, form the basis of the calculation for the size of joists required. A further part of this equation is discovered in Approved document A of the Building Regulations (Structure) where the possible snow loadings, depending on area of the country and height above the ordinance datum, are taken into consideration.

It is therefore important, before building your structure that you have the desired building regulation approval. There are 8 “maximum span” tables in the regulations, which deal with the loading and span of the roof together with any slight pitch over 10 degrees that it may have to dispose of rainwater. These tables and rules are designed to protect your home
Reply:don't worry about a structural engineer ..the loading will be approximately the same as for a normal floor ..obviously the walls below must be strong enough and the joist must span full the inside coarse of block work or brickwork ..to comply with building regs the joist must measure ..half the span plus two...so if your span is 2 point 5which is 100 inches ..half is 5 plus 2 ..so you would need 7 inch joist this is with 400 centres ..if in doubt ring your local building control
Reply:You need to hire a Structural Engineer in your area.

Depending on the value of the project, most Authorities Having Jurisdiction will not grant you a permit unless you submit to them drawings that have been stamped by a Professional Engineer.

Also, there are more factors involved, other than the capacity of people, that need to be calculated when determining your roof load. Most of these factors depend on where you live because each area has different requirements. For example: if you live in California your seismic requirements are much different than if you lived in Texas. Or if you live in Florida you have wind loads from hurricanes to factor. Same thing goes for snow and rain. Also, for your existing roof, you would need to know what species of lumber was used to build it since different species have different tensile and compressive strengths.

A Structural Engineer from your area would be familiar with these requirements and can point you in the right direction. To save you some money, many Engineers will be happy to review your drawings and stamp them for a small fee. Or they can do the entire design.

Good Luck! Hope I was helpful.

How do I remove citronella candle wax from waterproofed fabric?

The other day we accidentally spilled hot wax from a burning citronella candle onto the side of one of our garden furniture cushions. I'm afraid to try and iron it out in the "traditional" cleaning method because of the citronella oils in the wax (I don't want to remove the wax but leave a grease stain on the cushion.) The fabric is light green colored and is most likely cotton treated with some sort of waterproofing material. The cushions are able to be unzipped so we can remove the upholstered cover from the cushion. Thanks for your help!

How do I remove citronella candle wax from waterproofed fabric?
try rubbing the wax with an ice cube and scraping it away
Reply:scrape off all you can first, then try to iron it out, take the cover off and cover both sides with paper towels, then scrub with dawn dish soap
Reply:Goo Gone... it is the name of a product sold at stores like Wal-Mart
Reply:Heat the wax with a hair dryer and wipe the wax off. I would clean it with upolstery cleaner afterward.

Anyone know when Target's patio / garden stuff goes on sale?

I got a great deal on patio furniture at Target a while back ... They were having a huge annual or semi-annual patio/garden sale and I saved about $50.

We saw a gazebo there that we like and I was wondering if anyone knows when they have that big patio /garden sale? I can't remember when it was. Is it coming up by any chance?

Thanks!

I have only seen it go on sale at the end of the summer. (Like after Labor day.)

Can you help me plan my birthday party?

My birthday is coming up and we are settled on a garden party with a barbecue etc.

I always try to do something different - last year my cake was a pyramid made of swiss rolls - and I need some suggestions for this year.

I'm looking for:

1) Food and drinks recipes (perhaps non-alcoholic cocktails for my younger guests and those driving) that may be quite obscure but truly scrumptious;

2) Things for my guests to do. I thought about a guestbook for messages. Any other ideas?

3) Decor. I don't really want a theme, but if you know of some affordable garden furniture available in UK or other garden items, I would appreciate your help.

On your marks, get set..............start planning!

Can you help me plan my birthday party?
GRILLED PINEAPPLE WITH BUTTER-RUM GLAZE AND VANILLA MASCARPONE

If you can't find marscapone, good-quality vanilla ice cream will taste just fine.

1 cup dark rum

12 tablespoons (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter

1/4 cup light brown sugar

1 vanilla bean

8 ounces mascarpone

1 ripe pineapple, peeled and sliced into 1/4-inch-thick rounds

1/2 cup fresh blueberries

1. Combine the rum, butter, and sugar in a small saucepan and simmer, whisking often, until the sugar has melted and the mixture is slightly thickened, about 10 minutes. (The glaze can be made a few days in advance, cooled, covered, and kept refrigerated. Bring to room temperature before using.)

2. Cut the vanilla bean lengthwise in half and scrape out the seeds with the tip of a sharp knife. Whisk the mascarpone and vanilla seeds together. (The mascarpone can be made a day in advance, covered, and kept refrigerated.)

3. Heat your grill to high.

4. Grill the pineapple slices, brushing frequently with the glaze, until browned, 2 to 3 minutes per side.

5. Remove the pineapple to a platter or serving plates and top each slice with a dollop of vanilla mascarpone. Garnish with a few fresh blueberries. Serve immediately.

Makes 6 servings; can be doubled for 10 or 12 (no need to double the glaze).

Bobby Flay's Boy Gets Grill

FLAMING FRUIT KEBABS

This recipe is from Brini Maxwell's Guide to Gracious Living.

2 quarts fresh fruit such as pineapple chunks, strawberries, grapes, orange sections, and mango

12 soft bread cubes

1 bottle lemon extract

4 metal kebab skewers

Prepare this dish right before serving. Start by cutting up the fruit into bite-sized pieces (this can be done in advance), then soaking the bread cubes in the lemon extract. Anything soaked in lemon extract will burn with a lovely blue/yellow flame — that includes your clothing, the Formica, and this book, so be careful. Stack the fruit on the skewers, interspersing a cube whereever you'd like a flame. Be sure not to put a bread cube too close to the handle of the skewer. When the kebabs are all stacked, light the bread cubes. They'll burn nicely for a few minutes, but be sure to blow them out before trying to eat the fruit. Also, it's probably not a good idea to serve this dish in bed.

Makes 4 servings.

PASSION FRUIT ICED TEA

6 Orange Pekoe tea bags

6 1/4 cups cold water

1 cup cranberry juice cocktail

2/3 cup thawed frozen passion-fruit juice concentrate

or thawed frozen passion-fruit purée*

1/4 cup honey

sugar to taste, if using passion-fruit purée

Put tea bags in a heat-proof pitcher. In a saucepan bring water just to a boil and pour over tea bags. Steep tea, covered, 3 minutes and discard tea bags. Chill tea, covered, until cold. Stir in remaining ingredients, stirring until combined well.

LEMON VERBENA SODA

1/4 cup water

1/4 cup sugar

10 fresh leaves lemon verbena

4 cups chilled club soda or seltzer

In heavy medium saucepan over medium heat, stir together water and sugar until sugar dissolves. Simmer 3 minutes. Remove from heat, and add lemon verbena. Let steep 10 minutes, then strain. Fill 4 tall glasses with ice. Divide syrup among them, pour in club soda, stir, and serve.

JICAMA SLAW WITH LIME-ANCHO DRESSING

For the dressing:

1/2 cup fresh lime juice

2 tablespoons rice vinegar

2 tablespoons ancho chile powder

2 tablespoons honey

1/2 cup mild vegetable oil, such as canola

Salt and freshly ground pepper

For the slaw:

1 (2-pound) jicama, peeled and cut into matchsticks

1/2 head napa cabbage, cored and shredded

2 carrots, coarsely grated

1/4 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro leaves

Make the dressing:

Whisk together the lime juice, vinegar, ancho powder, and honey in a bowl. Whisk in the oil and season to taste with salt and pepper. (The dressing can be made a day in advance, covered, and kept refrigerated. Bring to room temperature before using.)

Make the slaw:

Combine the jicama, cabbage, and carrots in a large bowl. Pour the dressing over the jicama mixture and toss to coat well. Mix in the cilantro. Let sit at room temperature for 15 minutes before serving.

Makes 8 servings.

Bobby Flay's Boy Gets Grill

GARLIC-MUSTARD-GRILLED BEEF SKEWERS

Be sure to leave the skewers on the grill long enough to get the beef nice and crusty on both sides. This means you have to be patient, and remember: Don't turn them often.

Garlic-mustard glaze

1/4 cup whole grain mustard

2 tablespoons Dijon mustard

4 cloves garlic, finely chopped

2 tablespoons white wine vinegar

1 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce

1 tablespoon honey

1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh rosemary leaves

2 teaspoons Spanish paprika

1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Grilled beef skewers

2 pounds beef tenderloin

Twelve 6-inch wooden skewers, soaked in cold water for 30 minutes

For garlic-mustard glaze:

Whisk together all of the ingredients in a small bowl, cover, and let sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes and up to 4 hours before using.

For grilled beef skewers:

1. Heat your grill to high.

2. Cut the tenderloin lengthwise in half, then cut the halves lengthwise in half again. Slice crosswise to make 24 equal pieces. Skewer 2 pieces of beef onto each skewer, keeping them together at one end of the skewer. (This will make the grilled skewer easier to hold and eat.) Place the skewers in a baking dish or on a baking sheet, pour half of the glaze over the meat, and turn to coat.

3. Grill the meat, turning once and brushing with the remaining glaze, for 4 to 6 minutes until golden brown, slightly charred, and cooked to medium-rare. Transfer the skewers to a cutting board and let rest for 5 minutes.

4. Place the skewers on a platter and serve hot or at room temperature.

YELLOW TOMATO GAZPACHO WITH CILANTRO OIL AND AVOCADO

1 3/4 pounds yellow tomatoes, halved

1 cup chopped seeded peeled cucumber

1 cup chopped yellow bell pepper

1/2 cup finely chopped onion

1/2 cup orange juice

3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil

2 tablespoons Champagne vinegar or white wine vinegar

2 garlic cloves, chopped

1 medium jalapeño chili with seeds, chopped (about 1 tablespoon)

Cilantro Oil

1 avocado, peeled, pitted, chopped

Squeeze tomato juices and seeds into strainer set over bowl. Press on seeds to extract all juice. Chop tomatoes. Set aside 1/2 cup chopped tomatoes, 1/4 cup cucumber, and 1/4 cup bell pepper.

Combine remaining tomatoes, cucumber, and bell pepper in processor. Add tomato juices, onion, orange juice, oil, vinegar, garlic, and jalapeño; process until smooth. Season with salt and pepper. Transfer soup to bowl; add reserved vegetables. Cover and chill overnight.

Divide soup among 6 bowls. Drizzle with cilantro oil. Sprinkle with avocado.

I've been telling everybody about the "roasted red peppers stuffed with goat cheese and basil" appetizer. It's honestly simple enough that you could probably reconstruct it just from that sentence. =) The barbecue will of course be the main focus, but some good appetizers and sides are always welcome.

As far as activities...I think that depends more on your friends. Not everyone is up for a thrilling round of "Cam-Phone Bingo", where you attempt to complete a bingo on your card by taking pictures of the things described on said bingo card.

Simple idea for the decor is to help light up the space with a bunch of votive candles in empty glass jars. Seriously, just save them up as you acquire them, maybe scavenge from your friends and family.

Where can I find fabric to match patio furniture bought at Wal-Mart?

The furniture style is Palm Valley II and the brand is Better Homes and Gardens. I have extra pillows that I want to cover to match the fabric on the furniture.

Where can I find fabric to match patio furniture bought at Wal-Mart?
JoAnne fabrics carries Sunbrella fabric and so do some other fabric stores. I don't know if you can get the Palm Valley because that was a pattern designed for the BHG line at WalMart. But, you can get some coordinating fabric. Sunbrella is great because it won't mold or mildew or fade or stain and it has a 5 year warranty. Especially for pillows and cushions it really is the most durable and long lasting for outdoor patio use.
Reply:Check "JOANN ETC or HANCOCK FABRICS- or go online to "betterhomesandgardens.com" - they should have the design you are looking for.

What the rules of a tenancy agreement regarding untidy gardens?

This is a UK question.

The rules of the tenancy agreement specifies tidy gardens. The landlord is using the garden as harassment (it is impossible to comply with him) so what are my options? I have no proscribed weeds (do brambles count as weeds?) or vermin and I tidy up the paper rubbish caused by the neighbours. I do not have any smell creating pets or venomous wild animals. Bicycles and garden furniture I do have (but the neighbours have cars and caravans).

This is not the first time of harassment. I threatened legal action last time, but this time they are much heavier. I know it is enemies deliberately causing me trouble, but that does not stop the authorities doing it. I think they want me out so they can get their buddies in my flat, aided and abetted by unknown social workers.

What the rules of a tenancy agreement regarding untidy gardens?
Most tenancy agreements require the garden be kept in reasonable condition, which if not kept to, can be grounds for a landlord deciding he doesn't like you enough to evict you. However, nowhere in a tenancy agreement is it likely to go into specifics, which means your and your landlord's definition of what constitutes reasonable condition is between you to work out.

Keep records of all his visits and what is said/agreed, and photographs of any areas of offending garden. If he fails to accept he is harrassing you, take him to court with confidence (you have a right to "peaceful enjoyment" of the property eg no landlord interference without very good reason).

Alternatively, tell him to specify in writing PRECISELY what in the garden is of offence to him and compare that list to your agreement - if the agreement doesn't mention these items, he doesn't have a leg to stand on.

However, are you a protected tenant or on an AST? If protected there is NOTHING he can do except harrass you and hope you leave. If you're on an AST, he can evict you anyway in compliance with the agreement so why doesn't he just do that?

Good luck.
Reply:Do what he says, comply with his wishes, try be polite, but, STAND YOUR GROUND,don't let the f*cker force you out, if you think that someone is persecuting you get video evidence, keep it as back up, and also have a chat with you local council, good luck, and don't let the b*stards grind you down.
Reply:Do you need to see a Doctor?
Reply:We had to take the deposit from some tenants we had because the garden was untidy. Our grounds were that it looked nothing like it did when they moved in, so we had to get contractors in. If you have neglected it, give it a tidy up and show that you have made the effort (i know you have been tidying the rubbish but he wont have seen that before, i assume) so trim the hedges and cut the grass etc. How did you go about renting the place, was it through an agent? If so they might be able to hep you. Try trading standards, they are extremely helpful. Good luck!

What is the best affordable wood for outdoor furniture?

We need a new dining table and chairs for the garden. We can't afford teak but there appears to be a wide selection of products in either acacia wood or eucalyptus wood. Which of these two woods is the best choice and why? Of course if anyone knows a place to buy low cost teak furniture then please let us know. Thanks

What is the best affordable wood for outdoor furniture?
I'm just a poor good ole boy, but if you can afford to buy any wood furniture for outside, especially a dining table and chairs, I'd say you could afford the teak.
Reply:Well It isn't teak but wicker is a decent option. Yes, I know, it isn't wood in the traditional sense. But it is less expensive. And I have learned that sometimes you have to go with something in the ballpark that is less expensive. Also another option would be to get the teak furniture "nude"(unfinished) and finish it yourself with stain and protectant. It is amazing how much you can save with a little bit of do it yourself know how and of course having the time to actually do it.

How can I get rid of numerous garden orb spiders that cover my landscaping every summer?

We get over a hundred spiders that spin webs all around our yard, in all the bushes, trees, and on our deck furniture. I am looking for ideas on how we can eliminate them. I believe they are garden orb spiders. It makes it impossible to enjoy our yard and deck all summer. They don't come into the house so that is not a problem, just the outside.

How can I get rid of numerous garden orb spiders that cover my landscaping every summer?
Wow, are you lucky. They eat so many insects. If the webs are on furniture or across paths, take the webs down when the spiders are not in them. They will move elsewhere. Although doing this may kill the spiders anyway, because many spiders eat their webs in order to reuse the silk. Silk takes alot of energy to produce, and by eating the old silk, the spider saves energy and physical resources.

I am scared to death of spiders. But I won't kill them outside.
Reply:keep a long stick handy out there and just take down the webs that are in your way.... they'll make another one somewhere else.... it would seem that you have a great yard, cuz at some point, an egg case opened and a lot of babies came out and decided to stay!!!.... you must have lots of food handy for them... which means.... if there's no spiders to eat them, you'll be over-run with bugs..... so I'd be of the mind to put up with at least SOME of them..... what's worse?....a spider sitting quietly on her web over there on the bushes or funny lookin' bugs crawling all over your chair and table?.... yeah....
Reply:I get them during the dry season. I was told to leave them alone, they eat harmful insects and mosquitos. When I get Tired of looking at them I just use the hose and wash down all their webs.

Japanese Furniture?

I've seen a picture of this amazing garden furniture, it looks like a charcoal wicker, 4 chairs and a small table. They all stack up together to make a solid gherkin sort of shape when it's not in use and it's soooo cool! All I know is, that it's a Japanese design but I can't find where to get it from! I've searched google but to no avail :(

Any ideas?

You said you saw a picture. If it was in a publication, you could contact the publisher or editor, tell them which edition and page you was it in, and request information. If it was on a web page, perhaps contacting the web master would bare fruit.

UK Only - Would you buy stainless steel decorative ornaments for your garden?
Stainless steel might be good for a bird/squirrel deterrent. Something shiny that moves %26amp; reflects light to scare birds, deer, squirrels, %26amp; varmits away
Reply:a tad dangerous if they catch the sun and could set fire to your curtains inside the house.
Reply:Personally no, i think stainless steel is a bit harsh. I like wood for garden furniture and pottery for the pots. I can imagine though that some people with really modern houses it will looke quite funky and modern.
Reply:its too harsh, it attracts algae and dulls very quickly, i can name several suppliers locally, but there are no many superior alternatives

No. I didn't even know Wal-Mart had a garden section. I thought it was only a wallpaper store. I did however hit it in a courtroom when the court was closed. You really have to watch that gavel though. I think the Sheriffs will arrest you for that too. I've trumped you, Sugar.

Impressionist painting of 5 ladies reclining in rattan furniture in a garden.?

I have a print of this picture hanging in my sitting room. I have no idea who painted it or when. The ladies are dressed in long, white (possibly Edwardian) dresses and sitting in a shrubbery, not all of the ladies are fully visible. It may be detail from a larger picture. I love this picture so am looking for some information. Thanks

Sounds like something in the style of Edouard Manet or Pierre-Auguste Renoir. The Courtauld Gallery might help you (London).

Garden furniture-Wooden-or Plastic?
Um... Wood. It'd have to be finished wood (stained or something) because it'd be more resistant to rain (plain wood gets messed up fast when it rains often).
Reply:wooden
Reply:wooden plastic sucks
Reply:Wood costs more but looks better and has a bit more class, but plastic lasts longer and requires less maintenance. Your call.
Reply:Good quality wood furniture is your best bet! Cedar and Redwood furniture will look great and last for many years.
Reply:Depends on whether you want to leave it out. this summer has been very wet and wood soaks it all up whereas plastic drys easily.

Golden retreiver puppy destroys my garden?

My 6 month old Golden Retreiver puppy is very well behaved in the house, doesn't chew and is now house trained. When he is left in the garden he destroys everything, rips up shrubs, pulls over pots and destroys the plants in them, rips my garden furniture, digs holes and eats everything and anything. He is exercised regularly, has plenty of doggie toys in the garden and even has another, older, dog to keep him company. Any ideas why he does this and what I can do to stop it?

Golden retreiver puppy destroys my garden?
If this dog was destructive in the house, everyone would be shouting "separation anxiety".it's the same thing, the only difference is that it's happening outside. It's a big world out there for a puppy and he is distressed.

By all means let him out in the garden when you are at home, however you should keep going out to play with him. You are placing your dog in danger if you leave him in the garden for a long time. Apart from the stuff that he chews he could get stolen or harmed in some way.

Your dog should be in a safe place when you leave him and the garden is not a safe place. Leave your dog in a small room and assume that he will still have seperation anxiety when you do. Please carry out the following to keep your dog happy and stress free. This will also ensure that he does not become distructive in the house and your garden will suffer less.

If your dog suffers from separation anxiety, don’t give him free access to every room in your house when you leave him. . If you allow him free access you are doubling his burden. As well as having separation anxiety he will think that he has to guard every room in your house.

If he is restricted to one room he will not see you leave. You could also con him into thinking that you are always at home by carrying out the following procedure.

Try to do this when you are at home all day, or in the evening when you are there. Place him in a room with his comfortable bed, walk out and close the door. Open the door immediately and go back into his room, close the door behind you and try to ignore him. Pretend or actually do something which excludes your dog, for example if he is in the bathroom you could do a bit a cleaning for a couple of minutes. Then walk out of the room, go back again immediately and continue with the pretence. Keep doing this to ensure that your dog won’t feel isolated and eventually leave a small gap before you go into his room again. Over a period of days increase the gap before going back into his room.

It is vital that you get the timing right and this must be before your dog starts to whinge or cry. If you carry out this procedure for a few days, your dog will always think that you are just at the other side of the door.

When you are leaving your dog on his own please don’t make a dramatic exit, or this will give the game away. Simply put him into his room and walk out. When you come home don’t give him a big hello, just walk into his room and let him out for a pee. You can then play with him and give him cuddles.

If you go to work and leave your dog all day, try to get a friend or a professional to take him out for pees and poos.

Good Luck
Reply:He's not destroying - he's learning

He is not doing this to be naughty. Its just what they do and its not just labs

My two JR "re-landscape" my garden for me every day and take great pleasure in bringing me all the treasures that they find - usually old bones from the previous owner's dogs!!!!!

I have always said you can't have an immaculate show house and garden with HAPPY kids and dogs
Reply:Laboradors are reknowned for this. he will go on digging holes as long as he's with you which could be 12 years or so. Tie him on a short lease if you don't want him to misbehave
Reply:Why would you want to leave him alone?

6 to 12 months is the time when puppies/dogs are best taught social skills that is walking to heel, sit on command, stay, fetch, lay down. He is eager and primed to learn new skills (in the pack it would be hunting skills he would learn) and to learn where he fits in the pecking order.

A dog is not a status symbol- if you want him to become an integral and intelligent part of your family then you cannot afford to park him in the garden. Besides which, puppies fetch a premium in the testing laboratories - or didn't you know?
Reply:Your six month old puppy is just acting like a puppy, mischievious and naughty, my 13 month old dog does that and he is not such a puppy anymore. He is one laugh a minute but i must admit it is hard seeing all your hard work in the garden going down the dogs throat. Just be careful my dog ate a daffodil the other day and vomitted quite a few times. Your pup is just being a pup, naughty though:)))
Reply:Most Retrievers DIG excessively. I'd watch him when he's out and TRAIN him ( as you did when housebreaking him ) not to touch the flowers and things. Give him his digging area and work at that.
Reply:It's called 'being a puppy.'

He's testing out the world like we all did as kids, but instead of asking or touching he's chewing and dashing about.

I've had three dogs and for the first 18months or so of each living with us the garden went through the wringer! Tulips and Daffodils with no flowers (they wave in the breeze), trees and shrubs with branches missing (I never replaced a lovely Kilmarnock Willow that the first chewed to a 4" stick) and holes in the lawn exactly where garden chairs sit in Summer so you sit down and get flicked sideways out the chair.

My current dog is 13 and believe me I would give up my now lush garden to have some extra years with her as she sleeps a lot and has arthritis.

Oh, the joy of looking to see which plant needs a little TLC or worst case a funeral in a bin liner. Let him have fun while he's young enough to enjoy it. Don't try to train the joy out of life.
Reply:i dont know maybe your dog senses something eerie in teh garden because most house trained dogs dont do this im not sure but some dogs picck up the slightest scents id call someone to have a look at the garden or find out the history of it xxx
Reply:I think it is boredom you need to walk him more than 1 hour twice a day and as his natural instinct is to be a working dog, work him over fields get a friend to hide a long way through a forest and send to search etc. stimulate his brain.

Once you wear him out he will relaxe .

How can i keep cats away from my fence top and garden?

next doors damn cats are anoying me always climbing on ajoining fence and coming in garden, am scared they guna jump on my sorta green house, its one of those tempory ones.

any ideas to keep them away

How can i keep cats away from my fence top and garden?
I've been told by my very reliable pet-shop they no longer sell those long range cat repellents that rely on sound as these can also repel cats from their own homes if you have one next door. Now no-one would want to deprive an owner of their loved pet, so that's O.K with me. However, I find the best repellent is the good old fashioned Jeyes Fluid - They loathe the smell which is quite pleasant and clean to us, and will avoid contact with it, as it attaches to them and ruins their chance of leaving 'a scent'. You can buy it 'neat' in a can and sprinkle it lightly over the top of your fence and greenhouse top, or buy the spray version which is slightly milder but still effective. The same method would apply to your garden furniture - spray that too, and hopefully you won't have any more hassle with them. Good luck. Jan.
Reply:They are sensitive to strange smells and some are unpleasant, like Rue (or Ruta graveolens, the full botanical name) as mentioned earlier. Rue lasts for several years, and would be good semi-shaded near your fence. It doesn't tend to last as long in fertile soil, so put it in bad soil and it should thrive!

I use mothballs, which cost less than a £1 a packet, and the cats hate the smell of these too. Even get a male friend to pee nearby, and this should deter too, especially tom cats.

Good luck! Rob

Reply:put some pigeon spikes on top of your fence they are about 5" high and put some water bottles around your garden with holes in them so when the cats stand on them the water sqerts them as we all know cats hate water but it is completly harmless to the cats as i would think that you do not want to harm them in anyway and the pigeon spikes should do the trickas they wont cause any harm towards people and the cats but should deter the cats from your fence i hope this is of great help to you as you dont want to be the victim of animal crualty.
Reply:Plant some "Rue".

Desmond Morris explains in his book "catwatching", that he rubbed some between his fingers, and let his cat smell it.

The cat yowled immensely, ran out the house, and would not go near him for 2 days.
Reply:orange peel. get some and rub it on the to of the fence, the cats won't go near it.
Reply:check with your local green house/garden center. they usually have loads of deterrents for most every kind of animal or creature. and ask them about keeping the cats off of the fence, they probably have great tricks of the trade for that one too.
Reply:make up a mixture of water and white vinegar and spray the area's that you want to be rid of cats. i'm sure you don't want to harm animals so this would be a kind way. everyone happy then
Reply:Cats are territorial and DON’T like the scent of human urine.

It’s up to you how you get urine onto the areas where you don’t want cats.

Male urine is best as it doesn’t contain the hormones which may kill grass and so on.

Good luck.. Chris

I'm starting a garden furniture business...Western red cedar furniture....what should I name it?
Since any names that are suggested here may already be owned by another party, I wanted to go a different route...

I suggest either hiring a name creation firm or get together with your friends and/or family and throw a "name party" %26amp; have everyone bounce some ideas around. Compile a listing of names that you like the best. Once you have that list, do as much free research as you can before you delve into comprehensive research.

I listed some links where you can do some preliminary name checking. However, please be aware that this is merely scratching the surface of what's out there.

Only comprehensive research will tell you if the name is truly available. But, these links are free %26amp; a great place to start, so I'd try them out first.

Comprehensive research consists of looking at marks that are similar in Sound, Appearance or Meaning in the pending %26amp; registered Federal AND State trademark files as well as the US National Common-Law files.

There are other sites that offer free searching capabilities in conjunction with their commercial services, so I'm not able to post those links due to the Yahoo! TOS. You'll also want to check domain names %26amp; yellow pages, so simply do a search for "free domain name search" and "national yellowpages" and the appropriate links will pop up.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success %26amp; happiness in all your ventures!

Hard wood garden furniture...treatment??

i recently bought a beech coloured hard wood set of patio furniture...it was expensive but i bought it as i liked the colour of the wood.

my husband (when i was out) treated it with 'teak oil'..and it has completely changed the colour...and i now hate it...so as you can imagine..we exchanged a few words!

my husband said it is the correct treatment for the wood...and it has to be treated. anybody know if this is true... are you supposed to coat outdoor wood in teak oil?? thank you for any serious answers.

p.s. he told me to ask on Yahoo...to prove he is right!!

Hard wood garden furniture...treatment??
As a member of his gender, I am sorry to say he is WRONG!

TEAK oil is a darker colour than beech wood, hence it will obviously darken the colour of "beech coloured hardwood".

To best retain the appearance of light coloured woods, I recommend a clear water-based exterior varnish. There are many brands on the market these days, your local hardware store will advise. Oils are good for wood, but they generally darken the colour initially, with the added disadvantage of not sealing the wood from staining by just about anything else. Try washing it off with caustic soda and bleaching it to get the original colour back. (Well, let him do it to retrieve the relationship. hehehe)
Reply:Is beech Teak......? ask him that.
Reply:we have hardwood window frames and they have always been treated with Sikkens fluid, its not cheap at about £20 for a small tin, but it comes in all sorts of colours that you can use to treat your garden furniture, its also weatherproof. Its called sikkons cetol 7. i hope this helps, alternatively you could contact the makers of your furniture and ask them what they used.
Reply:Beech is light colored. Any wood that is going to be exposed to the elements should be treated. Unfortunately any treatment will alter the color some. Plain linseed oil or boiled linseed oil may have been a better choice but it will still darken the color of the wood. A clear, non yellowing exterior (marine) grade polyurethane would also be ok but will still darken the wood some.
Reply:if it's beech coloured: what hardwood is it made from as there are only a handfull of white hardwoods and not many i can think of thast would be suitable for outside use.

How do I repair my weathered oak garden furniture?

I bought some beautiful chucky oak garden furniture last year, however it was left untreated through some harsh weather conditions. Now it is cracked, splitting, and very discoloured on the exposed sides.

The colour of the wood has completely changed, and I would like to restore the wood to it's natural colour as much as possible. I don't really want to varnish or coat the wood. As i know absolutely nothing about wood care, I was wondering if someone could tell me step by step exactly what i need to do to sort it out!! Is it best to sand it down and then use a wood oil? Will this help restore colour or will the discolouration run deep?

I'm not afraid of hard work - not looking for an easy way out!

Thanks!

How do I repair my weathered oak garden furniture?
Nicky,

A lot depends upon where you live. Where we live (near Seattle) we have to treat our wood products with water staving treatments, and protect against mold. People in AZ have to prevent drying.

I'd recommend going to a place like Lowe's or Home Depot and talk to an 'expert' who knows oak, and products for your area.

You'll want to avoid linseed oil based products if you can, so look for stuff with cedar or tung oil.

All creatures Great and Small.

Reply:Hire a female grass otter costume from your local fancy dress hire shop (George at Asda make one, but it's cheap and not very realistic - looks more like a common otter), while wearing the costume you may begin the mating ritual. Walk past the nest from left to right (very important, do NOT start the ritual by walking right to left the consequences could be disastrous), and then right to left flicking your tail in his general direction every third step. When you have gained his trust he will come out of the nest to take a closer look, you must now begin flirting outrageously with him, you can if necessary ply him with alcohol, I find White Lightning or Bacardi Breezers work best. When he starts slapping your face with his tail he is ready to mate, tell him you want to play a kinky game, blindfold him and drive him to a location approximately 10 miles away, tell him to count to 100 (grass otters are notoriously bad at counting) and he will get the surprise of his life. When he's finished counting he removes the blindfold and he's mateless and homeless, this may or may not result in a suicide attempt, but at least you have your patio furniture back.

Works every time.

Reply:I personally would just leave him,so i'm not going to tell you what you can do about it!
Reply:I personally would contact every major media company in the world as Grass Otters (Gramen Lutra) have been extinct for the better part of 3 thousand years!

If you have made a slight mistake and have a Common Otter (Lutra Lutra) in your garden, contact the local RSPCA branch and seek their advice as Common Otters are endangered!
Reply:Trap or .22 Short will not make much noise
Reply:get a court order and evict his @ss
Reply:I go along with firecat_mage. Suggest you contact the Natural History Museum and then protect it with your life. Do the same when the Dodo turns up to keep it company.
Reply:Once again, get your dwarf to scare him away.
Reply:Why on earth would you want to get rid of him? I would feel priviledged and do anything to encourage him to stay!! If you must though, I agree with zanydumpling. Contact an animal welfare/wildlife organisation for advice.

Has anyone, like me, had problems with Kybotech (Simply Garden Furniture)?

They are crap at answering the phones or emails. I bought a stepper which took 2 months to be delivered!

Has anyone, like me, had problems with Kybotech (Simply Garden Furniture)?
KYBOTECH are time wasters who do not answeer phones or keep to delivery times. Worst thing I ever did was to even look on their website. Report Abuse

Reply:Hi. I bought a Billy-Oh Acorn Shed from them Sept 07. Was confusion over delivery date, but contacted the MD Charles Walton and in the end the company pulled out all stops to get the shed to me when I wanted it. Product was top notch so I really wanted to speak up in the company's favour. Report Abuse

Reply:If u order a Billy-Oh shed from Garden Buildings Direct u won't regret your purchase. Excellent quality and Easy 2 build. Arrived at 8.30am, we had it built %26amp; curtains up by late afternoon %26amp; the kids moved in by the evening! Lol. Value 4 money %26amp; better quality than ones sold in High St DIY stores! Reply:Yep. Ordered a childs swing back in March. Changed my mind and arranged for it to be returned. Still trying to get them to refund me what they owe me. No answer to emails. Get told the refund will be applied within 3-5 days every time I phone (4 times so far and had to hold for 30 minutes each time - thank god for saynoto0870.com), so it looks like we're going to have to go to court. Would never buy from them again.
Reply:Hi, actually I bought a trampoline from them a few months ago - it's really good and the kids love it. My neighbour recommended them after he used their furniture website. I saw some bad reviews on pricegrabber and posted a question on here as well - but noone answered it. In the end I took a risk, it was only just over £100, and it was delivered a couple of days later.
Reply:We have had major problems with Kyboteck. My father purchased a BBQ as a house warming gift back in May. It arrived the next day but was broken. We were told a replacement part would be sent out within 5 working day. We have still not received anything. Whenever we try to call we can never get through or have to wait over an hour to speak to someone who only tells us that we will be contacted by e-mail. Again no e-mail's arrive. Only once i got involved and threatened legal action have they e-mailed us stating that they are arranging a collection date and refund. So we shall see what happens. Will comment with any news.
Reply:We are having problems. Missing bolts and can't get to speak to anyone there.
Reply:I have had terrible trouble with them. I ordered a gazebo on 22nd june they sent me a box of gazebo curtains instead. They collected the duff goods promptly but never gave us the gazebo. We have been trying to find out what is going on - customer services are usless (if you can stand the wait on the phone lines to talk to someone!) they just fob you off saying you will hear by email in 5 days but you never do. We have bombarded them with emails but they simply ignore us. They have £50 of our money and we have nothing to show for it. Don't know what to do next - looking at trading standards for advice.

How could I use bedroom furniture as part of a garden design?

I have used wooden chair backs as trellises, and a baby crib frame too. I've seen a whole bed minus the mattresses as a planting bed. They raised it up and planted a patch work on it with low growing plants. Good luck!

How could I use bedroom furniture as part of a garden design?
I saw someone had an old Iron bed, just the headboard and footboard and frame that you put the matress on with no matress on it in their yard and in the middle of the frame where the matress would be they had all wild flowers growing. It was litteraly a flower bed! You couldn't use a wooden headboard and footboard outside but if you could find a metal one, that would be unique for your yard.
Reply:move your bed into the greenhouse!!!!!!!!

Can you treat your garden furniture whilst its damp?

I agree with the last answer, wait till its dry otherwise you will be sealing the damp in. After a couple of nice hot sunny days is the time, or am I only dreaming. Get a good preserver, one that doesn't stain your clothes. Come on sun, we like you really.

Can you treat your garden furniture whilst its damp?
Just think about it for a minute would you paint or seal any thing when damp.would you ware clothes when they are damp.
Reply:Definitely not. It needs to be dry. Also, you need a dry spell after you have treated it (a few days) in order for it to dry completely.

If I were to start a garden furniture and accessaries store - where do i source good inexpensive stuff from?

If you really want to put some effort into it you could check out some thrift stores or yard sales, you could buy stuff cheap and fix them for little to nothing. it will take time doing it that way but you wouldnt have alot of money into it. you could also try ebay.

If I were to start a garden furniture and accessaries store - where do i source good inexpensive stuff from?
look project first then you start spending upon contract value, no point of buying and stocking where no one will buy
