Reply:Garden Centres in addition to DIY stores.

If you look at Target.com, they have a lot of their patio furniture at a great discount right now. Look around the internet for any shipping discounts.

Home and Garden-How is shopping for furniture through Amazon like?

Hi,

I am trying to buy a Brown Microfiber Chaise Lounger from Amazon.com. The reviews that I have read so far is positive. As a first timer with on-line furniture shopping, I am nervous.

I am trying to find out some basics of how long it really takes for the piece to ship? Does it arrive as the one in the picture and the condition it arrives in? If anyone had an experience with returning a piece? Hope it won't come to that, but thanks for reading.

Home and Garden-How is shopping for furniture through Amazon like?
Most of the furniture listed in Amazon are sold by third party. You may want to check the credibility of the sellers, and their policy on shipping, returns, damages, etc.

I've had good experiences with http://www.homelement.com

Good luck!

Furniture from garden tree?

We have a gorgeous willow tree in our garden which will have to come down in the near future (For all you about to admonish me, i wish it could stay up, but its becoming unsafe and damaging our house foundations!) I would love to use the wood to make some furniture for our house. How do i go about this? Who do i need to talk to? I have no idea what steps the wood has to go through before a carpenter can use it. (Apart from the obvious cutting down part!) Many thanks x

Furniture from garden tree?
You would need to bring it to a lumber mill yard to have it stripped and will have to age to release the moisture before you can use it. It depends on how soon you need to use the wood for the furniture. They can kiln dry it, but will cost you more money. But, it would be better than leaving it outside to resist insect infestation.

Great idea.

Which is better for garden furniture and why, eucalyptus or hardwood????

HI the best is teak and It's also the hardest wood so there for long lasting but also the most expensive

Eucalyptus is a hardwood.

Does anyone know some good search keywords for garden furniture?

Garden furniture (of course) would be your first bet...I came up with 52 million hits on a yahoo search with just those key words.

Narrow it down. Try:

Garden and Lawn furniture

Wicker lawn furniture

Wrought iron outdoor furniture

Teak garden furniture

Cedar garden furniture

It really depends alot on which medium you are wanting in your furniture.

Antique garden furniture

simply Outdoor Furniture, would work as well.

Now, if you are looking to build your own outdoor furniture, you would probably try something like:

how-to build outdoor furniture free plans, or some combination of that. Or simply free woodworking plans, outdoor furniture.

And if that is what you are needing, try this link:

HI everybody i really need help to stop my dog from eating my wooden garden furniture hes a 1 yr old?

english mastiff ive tried spraying deep heat on it but its not working he is probably still teathing its areal problem please help

HI everybody i really need help to stop my dog from eating my wooden garden furniture hes a 1 yr old?
I'm not sure what deep heat is, but you should spray the furniture with Bitter Apple, and then to make sure he doesn't just get used to it (some dogs can develop a taste for it), spray the Bitter Apple directly on his tongue just once so it's a really bad memory. Sounds mean, but it honestly won't hurt him, and it will keep him safe from eating hunks of wood, which is dangerous.

In addition if he is teething, you need to get him some thing he IS allowed to chew - the best thing for teething babies is a nylarope soaked in water and frozen. Also, a big red Kong with something good in it, like his kibble soaked and frozen in there, too. Keep him supplied with one good thing for asl ong as he is out with the furniture, and make sure he is chewing the appropriate thing.

Don't give him anything too hard, like real bones or adult hardness Nylabones - they'll break his teeth-, and don't give him any of the edible chew treats - they break into hunks, and get stuck in their GI tract. Just soft Kong toys that are big, and maybe a Dentabone toy.

Hope this helps!
Reply:give him lots of chew toys. the bone-shaped-ropes really worked for my dog.
Reply:I had the same problem with my border collie puppy.

there is a toy called a kong, and you fill it with peanut butter, or they have stuff to put in them, and the dog licks it out through a hole. they are entertained for hours.
Reply:get him some good chew toys. like the hard rubber kind that you can hide treats in will keep him occupied. just whenever you catch him chewing on your furniture, tell him no and give him his toys. just keep at it and eventually, it should be okay. but he does need his own chewies!
Reply:Go to a pet store like Petco and tell a represetative that you have a mastiff that is teething and is chewing on your furniture. Tell them that you are looking for the best chew toys and bones for your pet so that it will stop eating furniture. They will be happy to help you. You can even take your pet with you. They welcome pets. Good Luck
Reply:I have an English Mastiff and remember the chewing days well. We had about a dozen teething items that we would literally rotate constantly all day long. It was almost funny to see him go from something coarse to cut into his gums on purpose helping teeth get in, to something soft to alleviate the pain of it, to something frozen we would give him ( try frozen bananas and frozen carrots - keep the freezer stocked) and then to a nylabone again. We had frozen washcloths soaked in water, socks with ice cubes tied in them, and plush toys stashed everywhere and on hand. It sounds like a pain but it was more like a way of life. He honestly NEVER destroyed anything in our house because we were always giving him something he was allowed to chew. If he even looked at something he shouldnt have, we would reach to the side table and give him the dog chew toy instead and praise him. To this day, he LOVES bananas.

It isnt forever but the chewing stage requires strategy and consistency - just be patient and have a chew toy arsenal to help you. You can almost make one from household items without even going to the store.

Good luck with your big guy!
Reply:My pit bull chews up tree branches that fall in the yard. Chews 'em to bits. There's little I can do about it because I live in a wooded area. I promise you, he doesn't do it out of boredom or lack of exercise. And he has plenty of Kong toys and scrap deer antler too, which my dogs love. He's never chewed my garden furniture, maybe because he can always find a stick or antler to chew when he feels like it.

For hundreds, or thousands, of years, people have used sticks to play "fetch" with their dogs. To my dog, chewing sticks is just more "play". (He's 1 yr. old, too.) Fallen tree branches are usually soft. Go for a walk and find your dog some sticks of his own.
Reply:I think your on the write track, you have to make it tastes unpleasant. Second you have to give it something to chew on. Iv'e hear of using tobacco water spray as an insectacide, mabey it would work with dogs LOL. Good luck

Teak garden furniture better than acacia? Worth the extra money?

Yes the cost is justified. Teak ages really well, the colour deepens and as long as you maintain it with oil it should last 20/30 years

Teak garden furniture better than acacia? Worth the extra money?
Teak is among them most durable wood on earth. It is used to make decks on ships and boats because of this characteristic. You have to judge whether the high price is worth the durability based on how long you will use the furniture.
Reply:Teak is supposed to be the best because of the natural oils contained in the wood act as a preserative, but you'll find that all wooden garden funiture will need topping up with oils once a year to keep them at their best.

So it's still down to which looks best.

What can i use to clean Teak garden furniture before i treat it with Teak Oil?

Sugar soap. This is available from DIY stores. Read the instructions and make sure the furniture is dry before you coat it with Teak Oil.

White garden furniture, need advice please.?

I was told that there is now a paint on the market for painting plastic (pvc) garden furniture.

If this is true, can anyone please tell me what it is called.

Thank you,

Cathorio.

White garden furniture, need advice please.?
It's Krylon paint for plastics. Rustoleum makes the same type of paint. Just go to one of the big box home stores and ask in their paint dept. It's a spray-on paint and works very well, as long as you use light coats instead of overspraying the area you are painting. There is also a new "paints everything" spray paint on the market.
Reply:Krylon "Fusion", designed for plastics and vinyls of all kind, without needing a primer

Do I need to cover my teak garden furniture when not being used?

Yes, as they tend to gather dust (as everything outside) and dirt and spiders and snails. During winter i cover (it does not snow even where i live)everything that cannot be taken inside or into a shed. Plus i put biological insect detergents onto/into the furniture.

During Summer i cover everything too because of the dust. Pillows and such must be taken inside every night.

no

Reply:I did when I lived in Arizona. Kept out of sunlght as well, when not being used.

Have just bought teak garden furniture don't know whether to use teak oil or not any advice wd be great?

It is new teak extending table and eight chairs would like to know pros and cons do not want to lose the natural effect of the grain.

Have just bought teak garden furniture don't know whether to use teak oil or not any advice wd be great?
any type of protection for outdoor furniture is good! I would also get a cover and cover it when not in use to keep it from getting worn out as well
Reply:use teak oil its the best
Reply:I believe you will have to use teak oil on it or else wasps will nest in it and you will have a problem
Reply:leave it for now as they are treated before dispatch and seaon later.
Reply:teak oil or linseed oil, is ok just cover them up in the "off months"
Reply:Yeah... I always use my own you-rine.
Reply:i dont even know what teak oil is
Reply:Pure teak oil should not affect the natural grain of the wood . It might darken the colour a little. As long as you don't use a varnish of any sort.I assumed that when I bought some teak furniture that it had been treated in manufacture and would not need further treatment in the first summer.I had to leave mine out in the winter, nowhere else to put it, and it faded and got a grayish colour . A treatment with teak oil made it look great again.I just give mine one rub with teak oil each spring.
Reply:Teak oil is brilliant, use it on my garden furniture every year, it protects the wood and makes the furniture look good. Wasp nests???
Reply:baby oil works just as well and is 99% cheaper!!

just apply and rub it in well, and it smells nicer.

try it on the underside of the table if you don't believe me!!
Reply:I have teak furniture outside. I've had it for 3 years and it looks almost new. The only thing is the stain has faided a little. I never bought teak oil I just used regular furniture oil. Not pledge but murphy's oil or pledge even had a furniture oil that I use as well.

What is the best way to look after garden teak furniture?

apply good quality Danish oil at least twice a year before summer %26amp; before winter. Danish oil is the best dont use teak oils or other wood oils..its a bit more expensive but it is bloody good

What is the best way to look after garden teak furniture?
Linseed oil is inexpensive and widely available, apply in the spring and just about now.
Reply:clean it stain it every other summer.
Reply:Watco has a wipe-on oil specifically for teak. You can put it on as often as you want, depending on how fast the piece is drying out. I used it on a bathroom vanity I made and left the can with the customer. I would say as a rule of thumb, it's good to apply the oil with the change of seasons. There is a photo of the piece on my site.
Reply:IF YOU can afford teak wood garden furniture, you can have a professional cabinet man apply a coat of marine grade acrylic every few years
Reply:Use a good quality Danish Oil (eg Rustins) .... at least twice ayear .... but carefully read instruction on back of can about disposing of the oily rag !!!! because it can, sometimes, self combust/ignite !!!!!!!!!!!!
Reply:You need to oil it regularly with a specialist oil - try B%26amp;Q or similar or garden center and take it in in winter to qavoid wet and frost
Reply:There are two ways. 1) as above which will keep it looking brownish and 'new'. and 2) Just leave it out in all weathers and it will acquire a silvery protective coating all by itself, which you should not attempt to rub off. I find this the most attractive look. The choice is yours.

Does anyone know the best way of cleaning cast aluminium garden furniture?

If it is unpainted, I would use steel wool, maybe SOS soap pads, which will not only clean it up but polish the metal to boot.

If painted, I would avoid power washing, which could take paint off. I'd just go with dish soap or car-washing soap and a scrub brush, one with bristles long enough to get into any detailing.

Does anyone know the best way of cleaning cast aluminium garden furniture?
a jet washer, failing that bucket hot soapy water, and a broom dip it in and it works wonders, probilies be able to get a aliminum cleaner aswell, from many retail outlets, good luck, and happy scrubbing..
Reply:High pressure wash. If you look in the automotive section of a store you'll find good cleaners for aluminum.
Reply:Power wash
Reply:If it is really bad you could find some one ( a firm ) who can bead blast it or sand blast , otherwise a high power jet wash.
Reply:You could always try a rotary wire brush in an electric drill, if you do this don't forget the goggles and face mask. It will be a bit messy but if done right the outcome should be what you are after.
Reply:bar keepers friend use a scrub brush and bar keepers friend the furniture will sparkle then rinse with your garden hose.

What should I treat my wooden garden furniture with?

Green Cuprinol. thats my choice but any shade you like. Choose a fine day, bit difficult at moment, but do not treat when damp otherwise you are sealing moisture in. Mind your patio slabs for stains. When its dry finish it with a fine coat of clear matt varnish. It'll last for years. If there are any metal nuts etc in contact with the wood give it a quick spray of WD40 in these areas

What should I treat my wooden garden furniture with?
cuprinol wood preserver
Reply:anything that makes it waterproof and brings the wood back to looking new,try cuprinol or ronseal.it does exactly what it says on the tin.lol.
Reply:care
Reply:Listen very carefully, DO NOT use Thompsons!!! Most of the other answers suggested an oil like teak/cuprinol. These are fine for that look. However, if you like a painted look(more apt to last longer than an oil), consider a exterior "stain" which applies like a paint. More pigment in a product will make your furniture last longer. and always, do ALL sides and especially any part that comes into contact with the surface its sitting on. You will not get this advice at any big box store!.
Reply:Thompsons waterproof agent.

used it on the deck for years. Great product and not too time consuming. Do it early and can enjoy the furniture again by dinner time.
Reply:The best way is Teak Oil every year at the end of the season. That way you should get many years out of them.

Hope this has helped.
Reply:cuprinal
Reply:depends on if it is natural wood or painted , most Paint stores will have something for patio furniture , if you use the annual waterproofing thing , sand the feet smooth and apply a generous amount to the bottoms as well , most people never do anything to the ends of the wood or the bottom of the feet and that is the part that is mostly in water , also ACE hardware will carry a good line of products designed just for the type of wood it is made of such as teak oil , danish oil , etc. those specialty oils work great .
Reply:definately use a water seal like thompsons . good luck .
Reply:Depends on what kind of look you want. If you want it completely water-proof and shiny you can use Minwax® Helmsman® Spar Urethane http://www.minwax.com/products/protectiv... If you'd like a more natural look then I'd suggest going with one of the Thompson products http://www.thompsonswaterseal.com
Reply:I use teak oil, looks like knew when it's done!
Reply:care and respect....ok ... just a water seal "like thompsons or something
Reply:Cuprinol Shades is good. It is made specifically for garden furniture. There are traditional colours as well as some funkier newer ones. Its' cover is good and it lasts well. I bought mine at B%26amp;Q, after some searching in various DIY stores. They had the largest range of colours.

Don't use any oils (eg. teak oil), creosote or creosote substitute, as it will come off on clothes.
Reply:Look for Milsak, sold near the Endust and Pledge. Wal-Mart carries it. It works wonders to keep all wood in good condition and soaks in pretty easily. It also doubles to keep stainless steel clean. Comes in a lovely Holiday spice scent to keep the house smelling fresh all year, everyday. I think there is also an Orange and Lemon scent if you prefer. Sold for less than $5 for about 16 oz but lasts a long time.

If it its for a swingset, shed or large outdoor item you might like Flood brand w/ water repellant. It adds a slight mellowing brownish, wet soaked-in rain look to unfinished wood. It is easy to apply. Sold in 1 gallon for about $25 but it goes a long way.
Reply:I like the look of weathered wood, so if it's teak or redwood, I leave it bare and touch up rough spots with a little sand paper. If it's made of pine or "third world" wood, I stain it gray to match the rest. RScott

I've had my garden furniture stolen is it worth claiming?

The total comes to about £400 but is it worth claiming on the house insurance or will my no claims discount be wiped out next year and end up costing me more in the long run?

I've had my garden furniture stolen is it worth claiming?
Had exactly the same thing happen..

Usually its not worth claiming as there will be an excess, do you have a crime reference number, was the back gate locked %26amp; the best one - do you have receipts... If you have a no claims protected policy - claim - if not (Most arn't) depends on excess..

I find landmines to be a worthwile addition to your garden accessories... ;) grin.... If only!

Have fun!
Reply:of course it is !!!! you were violated!!! report it and claim it !!
Reply:I think it would be best to claim it it depends what sort of insurance policy you've got. You need to work out the cost of all the furniture (£400) versus how much you would loose on insurance. Hope that helps
Reply:What is your deductible. If the value is less than your deductible, then no reason to claim it.

Save the insurance for something more valuable.
Reply:depends on what your deductable is?
Reply:it wont afect your insurance that much, maybe a couple of pounds a year. If you've reported it to the police, get the crime number to give to your insurance co. its deffo worth claiming

Try Loot, or charity furniture stores.

Where can I get plastic garden furniture, resin patio chairs and table for under £40?
if your in england why dont you try somewhere like wilkinsons, i'm in portsmouth and we've got a chain of shops called mr. cheap, try somewhere like that if youve got em near you.
Reply:Try B%26amp;Q or Homebase if you're in the UK....they have some quite good deals on at the moment on garden furniture!!

If you're not in the UK then I can't help!! lol
Reply:places like Tesco, Asda, Poundstretchers, Wilkinsons, usually have plastic furniture in as well as wooden ones. I think you may find it's a bit late in the season now to buy as most of the shops are getting their Xmas stuff out on the shelves. You could ask though at any of these stores as they may have them in the back of the shop in storage.
Reply:Walmart or your neighbor's house when they are out of town.

Another Garden Furniture Question?

HI,

Ive finally found some garden furniture i like, hoorahhhh !

BUT - I found some which is fixed but very, very expensive and theirs something which is almost identical but comes flat packed which is almost half the price. Their both made from solid wood, so what do you think would be the better buy?

Thanks

Another Garden Furniture Question?
flat pack you'll feel that youve acheived something 2 yrs down the line when youve finally put it together..xxx
Reply:well if you do not want to put it together then get the pre assembled furniture but if the "assembly required" is less expensive and that is what you are looking for then go for it... honestly I like to save as much money as possible so I would go for the assembly required.
Reply:try looking at www.pricerunner.com

you usually find the same items here for half the price.
Reply:not sure but if is the same and is really well fixed is allright
Reply:You have to assemble the one that is flat packed. That may be difficult. Its cheaper so there is a tradeoff. I have a brother who is handy so I would get the unassembled furniture. good luck!
Reply:I am sure there is a good man in your life, who would only be to pleased to help you, go cheap and get a man at the same time
Reply:i would go for the half priced one as long as your good at putting furniture together as long as you can read instructions you should be fine go for the half price save some money.

Garden furniture paint is quite expensive, is there anything else that will do the job just as good?
if its hardwood furniture steve j is bang on correcct a good rub down and then teak oil
Reply:Try rubbing it down and using teak oil instead.
Reply:Well, depending and what the material is your looking to paint, if it is metal or plastic you could go with Krylon brand paint. It is designed for both interior and exterior use.

http://www.krylon.com/
Reply:u can try to search here home-improvement-idea.blogspot.com
Reply:Prior answerer believes you have wood garden furniture. I suspect you have plastic, and have noticed that the Krylon paint for plastic is crazy expensive. Unfortunately, they seem to have a corner on the market for the time being. I do not think there is another product that will not continually scratch and chip off. I was going to re-do some chairs myself, but stopped the plan when I saw the investment. Almost cheaper to get new furniture! Consider some of the cleaners they have now made just for resin furniture.

I would suggest you speak with the experts at your local home and garden center, or wherever in your area fine

Good luck with that.

Is it better to buy teak garden furniture rather than hard wood, if so why?

teak it a wood that is used on sailboats and water doesnt have any adverse affect on it. it does have an oily sap so that is why it lasts so long.teak wont warp like oak or maple.

Is it better to buy teak garden furniture rather than hard wood, if so why?
Hard wood will not last outside, even in relatively mild climates like California. It will dry rot, wet rot, or be attacked by insects.

Teak will last many years if maintained properly (oiled regularly).
Reply:Teak is a hard wood that lasts along time and needs attention just as the other hardwood does..One thing is its more expensive and prettier. Its all in what you prefer and can afford. Myself I have fiberglas table and plastic chairs.

Looking to buy pressure washer - what bar and wattage do I need to clean slime from patio & garden furniture?

I've got a 1500 psi (don't know what that is in bar...) which does the job very well.

For cleaning large areas of concrete/patio slabs I would go for a higher psi if I have to buy a new one - if the cost was not much extra.

Here's the reason:- When cleaning large or difficult "old" patio areas you have to concentrate the water jet down very fine to really cut through. With higher psi you would be able to keep the water jet further away, so you clean a bigger area quicker.

HOWEVER you only do this infrequently, so if cost is important, 1500psi is more than enough.

How to renovate garden furniture.?

What is the best way you found to renovate old garden furhiture?

How to renovate garden furniture.?
If the old treatment is peeling then it sounds like someone used varnish on it. Avoid this at all costs when you re-treat it! The first thing you will have to do is sand it down to remove all the loose flakes and also any shine left on from the old treatment. Once you have done this dab some turps or white spirit on a cloth and wipe down all the surfaces. This will remove any excess dust from the sanding down and give a nice clean surface for the new treatment to adhere to. When you get a new treatment make sure that it is an exterior woodstain preferably one that is specifically made for garden furniture. When you paint the furniture again make sure you give it at least 2/3 coats. Firstly, this will ensure it is well protected, but it will also give you a good rich, deep colour. Use a very fine sand paper and LIGHTLY sand down the table between coats. Let each coat dry, sand down and then wipe down with white spirit again before applying the next coat. As mentioned previously make sure you give legs a good coat on the ends either by giving them a few extra coats on the end grain or by soaking them. My only reservation with soaking them is that there is a tendancy for the leg to absorb so much stain that the legs become a different colour to the rest of the item of furniture. Good Luck!!
Reply:If any holes in the furniture, then you can repair them (small ones) with wood stopper - fill in the hole and then rub it down with wet and dry abasive paper.

When buying the woodstopper - If you can't find a shade to match the wood then mix a little liquid wood stain with it.

If you choose to sand down, dust off and varnish - then big tip - is to make sure you don't shake the varnish - as air bubbles can spoil the finish.

Another big point - don't leave any areas un painted or varnished - as bare wood is an open invitation to woodworm.

To protect wood - another option is to use oil - remember however to protect the end grain - emmerce the legs in little containers of oil so that the end grain can absorb it.

Hardware shop should be able to help / advise you further.
Reply:One thing that makes old cruddy furniture look good again is Gelstain. No stripping is needed and possibly no sanding. Gelstain goes right over old finishes. It comes in a variety of colors and is made by Miniwax. It is sold at Walmart and other hardware stores. Try it on a picture frame first to find the color you want. Chestnut is what I used. I gelstained an Amish made kitchen table and it looks absolutely gorgeous. I put polyurethane on it after to protect it from cup sweat.
Reply:If wooden replace any slates that are beyond repair, replace any rusted screws and then sand it down and restain/varnish oil with an appropriate outdoor product.

If metal then rub it smooth and give it a key (not necessary to get every bit of paint off) and then treat it with Hammerite or similar in the colour you want. I prefer a spray can to the paint. It is less likely to run.

If plastic give it a darned good wash and scrub with washing-up liquid.
Reply:If it's wood then get all the flakes off, paint with a wood primer then paint or stain. If it's metal do the same but use metal paint on it.
Reply:Powerjet is easiest,or sand down and re-stain
Reply:Paint it and buy new cushions

How can I strip back some painted aluminum garden furniture?

You can pressure wash it, but you might find it a little faster if you brush on a painter stipper. Brush it in to the cracks and the grooves so you can remove it all in one go.

Are you going to refinish it? If so aluminum needs to be sanded lightly or even better, sandblast it if possible. This helps with the oxidization and is part of the proper prep when dealing with aluminum. I do body work on big oilfield equipment, and they are all made out of aluminum. It will need to be primed right after. After the aluminum has been sanded it needs to be primed and painted within 12hours.

If you are not refinishing it you dont need to do anything to it at all, as you already know. Hope this helps! GOod luck

Go to Home Depot and get some orange natural stripper it will work great. Or use a pressure washer it will fly off.

What can I use to clean white garden furniture?

spray with neat vinegar and leave for a few mins then wash off.

What can I use to clean white garden furniture?
If it is the resin chairs they make a cleaner for them but I just use Sp*c %26amp; Span in a bucket of hot water. Wet them brush with a scrub brush %26amp; the soap mixture then rinse off with a hose.
Reply:Clorox bleach make a strong solution with water and wet every inch let it on overnight.
Reply:pressure washer
Reply:Depends upon what it's made of. Cast alum or iron, you can use Clorox and water and a brush. Pressure washer may also work if paint is on very well and not chipping. You may also try Jo-Max as it has a surfactant that helps it "stick" to the item so the bleach has time to clean it.

For wicker, I'd use a very mild bleach solution.

Of course, where I am, it's humid and mildew is always a problem. If it's just dirt, hose it off.
Reply:comet and a brillo pab work well on the white pvc furniture
Reply:You can use "clorox-clean-up" or a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser!
Reply:Try that Mr. Clean magic erasing sponge. It'll surprise you how well it works.
Reply:bleach water/rinse good afterwards
Reply:For wicker, I use scrubbing bubbles and then rinse really good with garden hose and make sure you set it somewhere that it can dry fast. You'll be suprised how well it works but you have to follow the directions on the can and let it set long enough because if you rinse it to soon it won't do any good.
Reply:I use Castro Super Clean . You find it in the automotive dept at Walmart in gallon bottles ..mix as needed. Works well on boats too.

Hi, Need help buying garden furniture?

Ive seen a garden set made from teak and rosewood. I know teak is ideal for the garden but what about the rosewood. The furniture has rosewood legs and the rest is in teak. It looks great but I just want to be sure.

Thanks

Hi, Need help buying garden furniture?
The furniture has to be fit for purpose, so if it's being sold as garden furniture, it will be suitable for garden use. Do protect it with the proper product and you'll be fine.

Our rottie ate one of our palm trees. We just came home one day and it was gone. Then the next day he yelped while trying to poo and started chasing his nubby tail and crying. We then noticed a palm leaf coming out his butt. My husband had to "help" him by gently pulling the palm frond out his butt. Did he learn a lesson? Hell no. A couple of months later another little palm tree disappeared..........................

Where can get cheap but quality garden furniture?

I want to spend £100 - £200 on a table and bench set that I can leave out all year round - it has to be solid wood, or a quality metal - thanks for all feedback:-)

Reply:Are you in the UK? How about a trip to your local B%26amp;Q or Homebase where you can physically see and sit on the furniture. How about your local garden centre too? I would say Argos for cheap and cheerful but it might not be the best quality.
Reply:Try looking in your local paper for people selling them. You could possibly put a wanted ad in the paper too. Maybe someone will see it and give you a call. Or you can search yard/garage sales.

How do I maintain teak garden furniture?

it is very hard work sanding it all down each year and repainiting it, there must be an easier way or a product that does not require the sanding down.

How do I maintain teak garden furniture?
(m)

The Teak Wood Cleaner is a safe and easy to use product. This formula is designed to remove stains and that weathered look that all outdoor woods get over time. No need to sand the wood after cleaning, as the product does not raise the wood grain. The Teak Wood Brightener is made to brighten teak wood by highlighting the wood grain and enhancing its warm natural color. This product would be used as the second step in restoring your weathered wood. The Premium Teak Wood Oil Outdoor Decor carries gives your teak wood long lasting protection against the elements. The ultraviolet absorbers in the oil helps maintain the warm natural coloring. This particular brand is rated #1 in independent testing, and lasts 4-6 times longer than other standard teak oils. It uses an advanced tung oil polymer formula. They also carry a huge assortment of cushions for teak benches and outdoor dining chairs.
Reply:A basic method for oiling is as follows:

The furniture will need to be cleaned first [see below] Afterwards ensure that it is nice and dry before starting to oil. Have a good look around the furniture first and attend to any areas requiring sanding before starting work. You will need some teak oil, a clean paint brush, some clean cotton rags, good light and plenty of space to work in. It can be a little messy so be sure to wear some overalls, and wearing household gloves to keep the oil off your hands is a good idea as well. The oil can be applied with a clean brush, starting from the top and working downwards. The surface should be left wet by the brush, but try to avoid leaving too much surplus oil behind as you work. After a few minutes - maybe 5 - 15 depending on the ambient temperature, the oil will start to become 'tacky'. At this point the surface of the furniture should be wiped down with a clean cotton rag, carefully removing all surplus oil. One coat is usually sufficient, but you can apply a second coat if required, after a minimum of one hour for the first coat to dry. Once you've completed the oiling and the surface is touch dry, a second clean rag can be used to buff up the surface. Please be sure to dispose of any used rags and cleaning cloths carefully, and in accordance with the instructions from the oil manufacturer.

Cleaning Teak Furniture:

If your Teak furniture requires cleaning this can be done with a normal household bristle brush [not too hard] and some warm mildly soapy water. Wash down afterwards with clean water. There are also proprietary cleaners on the market which can also be used to clean off various deposits and accumulated dirt and stains. We do not recommend the use of high pressure hoses, and steel wool or steel wire brushes should not be used at all as any residue left in the grain will rust and discolor the wood. If the furniture has some stubborn and heavily ingrained stains these can be removed by sanding with a fine grade of sandpaper, being sure to work only with the direction of the timber grain. After sanding stains away like this, if the furniture was previously teak oiled you may wish to re-oil, or if it had previously been left natural, the fresh teak color exposed by sanding will soon mellow in with the existing silver gray patina.

Repainting aluminium garden furniture. Advice required.?

Have some old cast aluminium garden furniture, paint peeling off, white powdery 'salts' underneath. Some of the paint scrapes easily and other places seem well stuck. Do I need to remove it all? How shall I treat the 'salts'. With acid? What is the best type of paint to use for repainting.

Thanks.

Repainting aluminium garden furniture. Advice required.?
Not sure if this would be the same but I painted my aluminum siding. I used a detergent called "TSP". It comes in powder or liquid form. With previously painted aluminum you need to get the gloss and chalking substance off. The powder form needs to be mixed with water. Just spray it on and let is sit for a few minutes. After that just wash off. In your case make sure you get all of the old paint off. I would use sand paper to rough up the aluminum. After that it should be acid etched. This will help the paint stick. Use a epoxy based primer. After that I would just use a outdoor spray paint. I just found a link on how to repaint aluminum......

Good Luck!
Reply:I would use a pressure washer preferably one with at least 2,000 psi and with a power turbo tip. The turbo tip has a small pinpoint that oscillates in a spiral...really does a good job at paint stripping! You may not get all the paint off but I don't think that matters much. The "salts" sound like corrosion but I think if you pressure washed it they should blast away. (you may have some pit marks). I would spray a exterior primer on it (oil based) then when dry you could go over that with a good quality exterior latex paint. I hope you can find access to the equipment as it beats a scraper and wire brush hands down!

Another alternative would be to use some paint remover. read the instructions and see what happens on a small piece like a leg or something!
Reply:I would suggest sand blasting an etch primer and then a top coat.
Reply:I think you need to use an Etch Primer for ferrous and non ferrous surfaces.

Ensure surfaces are clean, dry, free from dirt, grease and other contamination.
Reply:The easiest way to go about this problem is to first remove all of the "salts" otherwise known as efflorescence by using a mixture of a product called TSP and warm water - after this is done, wash the remaining solution off with warm water - once dry use a latex bonding primer specifically made to adhere to aluminum - after this, topcoat the aluminum. As far as the best paint to use, that would be an exterior enamel. They tend to be a little more durable than an acrylic. Make sure you buy a water-based product, an alkyd or oil will yellow and chip over time. Water based products tend to remain a little more flexible.

Does anyone know of a garden furniture paint for metal that can be sprayed on over rust?

we have tried the ones you paint on but metalwork is to inracate

Does anyone know of a garden furniture paint for metal that can be sprayed on over rust?
Both Rustoleum and Krylon are good but both will flake right off if you don't do something to knock the rust off. If you don't have access to a professional bead blaster or sand blaster (and most of us don't), take a stiff wire brush to the metal, followed by acetone to clean it up before you spray it.
Reply:I agree with Wise One. It's also available in the U.S. It's good stuff.
Reply:My husband has just painted our gate with Hammerite. Used an angle grinder to remove some of the rust and old paint. It is a cast iron gate as well. It is looking great now.
Reply:ace hardware makes "rusty Metal Primer" in spray
Reply:it would be too thin if sprayed
Reply:i think u can find help in

i hope this can help
Reply:Rustoleum makes a product that does just what you are asking for
Reply:tremclad. you don't need a primer. best to sand of a little first though because it would be less rough.
Reply:Hammer rite any focus or d.i.y. spray cans, needs rust to bond
Reply:Rustoleum spray paint and primer. Use a wire brush to remove as much rust as possible first, then prime and paint. If you just spray over the existing rust, any paint will be peeling before the summer is over.
Reply:Use a stiff brush to get rid of the flakes of rust and then paint with hammerite. I use it outside metal and it works a treat

Wrought Iron garden furniture. Its rusty, what is the best way to prepare it and repaint?

thoroughly remove old paint with a wire brush and then emery paper (sandpaper for metal). Apply a rex oxide primer, or some sort of rust inhibitor, then paint in your chosen colour. Hammerite is good, but there are plenty of other paints for metal at the DIY store.

What is the best way to stop my garden Garden Furniture sinking into the grass .?

you need to increase the surface area of the chair leg bottoms, reduce water in lawn, or add some flat supports under the chairs. Some 1"X4"X4" wooden coasters screwed to the bottom of chair legs would likely be easiest. moving the furniture around frequently would help too.

What is the best way to stop my garden Garden Furniture sinking into the grass .?
Maybe use those things you use to stop furniture legs from leaving little dents in carpet. Any hardware store should have them.
Reply:We dug out an area slightly larger than our patio table, put down a layer of sand and then put down bricks. that way people have a hard surface to put their feet on, and the furniture rests on brick instead of grass.
Reply:Put a patio paver or a brick under each point where the furniture touches the lawn.

What kind of garden furniture do you like?

I once found some really nice furniture made of really heavy wire covered in plastic so that the summer rains did not harm it ...... it was never hot from the sun ...... but it was in a park, and I never was there when the caretakers were there, to ask where it had come from ...... I love that stuff.

With it went nice low round tables on a pedestal, in heavily coated natural wood ... they were also rainproof and really nice ... spill proof, too, and low enough for a child to feel comfortable using....

In this particular park, there were no umbrellas because planted in the seating section were Honey Locusts ... disarming and lovely ...

Garden Furniture Table, chairs & a parasol, dont know whether to go for wood or glass & metal or plastic?

I am looking for an attractive, sturdy easy to clean %26amp; look after table %26amp; chairs for my garden. (possibly one thats seats 6 people) However, do not want to spend a fortune, can anyone recommended where i should go for this, i.e Argos, Robert Dyas etc I have never brought garden furniture before, so need to know whats good %26amp; whats not! Thanks

Garden Furniture Table, chairs %26amp; a parasol, dont know whether to go for wood or glass %26amp; metal or plastic?
Plastic doesn't wear too well. My favourite garden furniture is the wooden type. It lasts for years if you apply some wood oil to it once a year %26amp; it looks lovely. It can be expensive, but I got my set from my nearest IKEA store (www.ikea.co.uk) %26amp; it was cheaper than some plastic sets I've seen in garden centres etc!
Reply:Wood is beautiful but has to be maintained and treated also stays damp after a shower. Plastic is easy to clean, and you can leave the seats tilted forward so they don't stay wet in the rain, or you can dry them easily with a towel. They get weathered after a few years and stark getting discoloured and cracked. Don't know about metal

Argos has a good selection including a set for four with 2 loungers table and umbrella for about £90. and they'll deliver for about £4. Tesco have a small table umbrella and two chairs for about £15 which I think is a great price
Reply:I love redwood. I see it all the time in the catalogs...but currently I have white plastic.and the set came from Walmart.

Reply:I would go for wood, it's a renewable source and if made from sustained / managed forests then have minimal environmental impact. Plus, when you finally get rid of it they are biudegradeable and so can be recycled instead of sitting in land fill like plastic would. Plus, I just think wood looks much better, natural and compliments the garden well I think.

Woolworths usually have a good range at reasonable prices and last time I looked they had a sale. Try their website.

Good luck. Oh, buy one of those covers that go over your furniture to save you having to fold your garden furniture away when it rains, also means as soon as rain stops you can use it and it won't be damp.
Reply:My experience with plastic...SUCKS! they faded and stained and cracked...But I did leave them out all year. I tried painting them and then they peeled and stained more! SOOO if you go plastic..spend the extra buck for covers!
Reply:a good quality wooden one looks fantastic in the garden and doesnt rust like metal and doesnt break as easily as glass.

check around google for some good sites for garden furniture.. also if you have a place called "hooties" near you, id try there.. its mega cheap
Reply:your outdoor environment will determine what type of furniture more than anything. Also take into consideration your lifestyle. Family or not pets things like that.
Reply:well its always your decision at the end of the day but i will advise you any how /wood will rot with time /glass can be dangerous if you have children around and to plastic its durable long lasting easy to clean it wont get hot in summer and burn you if you lean on it so with all this in mind think about the pros and the cons now decide and go have you self a nice time .
Reply:In my opinion, wood is best. As long as you put it indoors through the winter, and a coat of varnish or stain every 2-3 years, it'll make you proud. We have had plastic, just plain cheap unless you plan to keep it only a summer or two, and a VERY expensive metal and glass with grapevine details, that was SO heavy to bring in and out for the seasons, and ended up rusting, as well as the glass top cracking from a tree branch in a thunderstorm, lol! So based on my personal experience, wood is your best bet! Good luck! :)
Reply:The type of material you choose for your garden furniture depends on many variables.

The style of your home would dictate to a degree the style.

for example if you have a traditional style home, timber or cast iron furniture would be a good choice.

If it were a more modern home, you could use plastic or glass and aluminium.

The climate where you live would also have a bearing on your choice.

If you don't want to spend a lot of money, then perhaps buy a quality used setting. You can often buy from someone who's moving house at a fraction of new price.
Reply:get metal but only if it has anti rust on it, and argos is good or focus diy
Reply:I have just got a set from Focus DIY, it sits 6 with parasol and its metal with a toughen glass and grey plastic and metal mesh chairs and it was only about £250 for the set. If the weather carries on like this I am sire most of the DIY stores will start doing deals.

Garden Furniture?

We have a lovely wooden table and chairs but would they spoil if i left them out permanently for the summer? Theyre treated with something - ie they came like that. We hardly ever use them cos its a pain getting them in and out of the shed, but if i felt safe to leave them out we'd use them more! Its been so wet lately ..

Garden Furniture?
I have wooden furniture out in my garden year long. If they are sealed with a non-yellowing polyurethane, you will need to add extra coats every other year or so to continue protection. Also, I purchased covers for my furniture that keeps the leaves off of them and adds protection during our rainy season. I have the ones with vinyl on the top but fabric underneath against the furniture. The ones that are only made of vinyl can trap moisture between the cover and wood which causes mold or mildew.
