My house seems to be dusty all the time. I clean up %26amp; dust the furniture, and next thing I know, it's a mess again. I even have newer windows that are closed most of the time, I have primarily hard-wood floors (I thought maybe it was the carpet). I sweep %26amp; vacuum constantly. My backyard is almost entirely patio/pool, although I have small garden areas surrounding that. I just feel like everything is so dirty all the time, its embarrassing! I can even kind of see it floating in the air if the sun comes through the window just right! I do have an older home, so I don't know if its even anything I can resolve --- suggestions?
Where's it coming from?
Have the air vents and ducts cleaned.
People would be extremely surprised at the amount of dust and dirt in duct vents. I had this problem too, and immediately after cleaning and dusting I would see a thin layer of dust settling on everything, and found out it was coming from the central air vents in the summer and the heating vents in the winter.
I called a Heating and Cooling RESIDENTUAL Company and they came and inspected the ducts and found almost an INCH [and that's a LOT really for a residentual place] of dust and dirt in the vents and they also inspected for mold spores and animal hair and found some of that too, since I have cats.
Once they did a very good cleaning and disinfecting, the dust disappeared.
Now I have the vents cleaned YEARLY at the end of summer to keep down the amount of dust and dander coming in the house while it's closed up from the cold.
I haven't had that dust problem since.
I innocently enough didn't know you were suppose to have the vents cleaned, but it makes sense, if you don't clean them who does?!
And the sad part is no one ever bothered to tell me this and there were no "First Home-101" classes to take back then either [giggle]so I had to learn the hard way--hopefully you won't and that this helps.
Reply:Dust is all around us. No one can truly clean a house. Dust can also be dead skin cells that fall off your skin when you sleep.
Reply:Well if you are in a polluted neighborhood, near a big road or a factory or anything that produces dust, you can't do a thing.
But if it is not so in your neighbor house for example then the problem is your house.
Try dusting all the furniture outside your home, the carpet too (you can even wash it), don't let somebody walk around the house with shoes (from outside), and at last sweep the dust from the ceiling, walls and furniture before you bring everything in side.
Reply:Most dust is created by your body shedding dead skin and the blown in type of insulation is a major type of contributor. You were right when you said that the carpet was producing the dust, as it is also a major contributor to your IAQ. The solution is to raise the filtering value of your furnace or air handler and to also see about having the ducts cleaned. if you have no duct work then you should see about buying a room size filtering device. The easiest thing to do is to turn your furnace fan to the on position (if you have one) this will pass the air through the filter constantly.
